Description
Solid glycine is a white to grayish-white crystalline powder, odorless and non-toxic. Glycine is readily soluble in water and almost insoluble in ethanol or ether. Glycine is used in the pharmaceutical industry, biochemical experiments and organic synthesis. Glycine is the simplest amino acid in the amino acid series and is not essential for the human body. Glycine has both acidic and basic functional groups in its molecule. Glycine can be ionized in water and has strong hydrophilicity. However, Glycine is a non-polar amino acid, soluble in polar solvents but insoluble in non-polar solvents. Moreover, Glycine has a relatively high boiling point and melting point.
